Although the city of Vienna is renowned for its classical art, the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna shows that the city is most definitely not stuck in the past.
The Museum of Modern Art is the largest modern art Museum in Austria, and inside visitors can experience a range of modern art from American pop art to hyper-realism. It was opened in 1962 and was initially known as the "Museum of the 20th century". The architecture of the building is unusual, but fits the museum's theme. From the outside, it appears as a large concrete block, made up of many smaller blocks.
The museum is set out on 5 floors, two of which are underground and occupies over 14,000 square meters.
It boasts collections dealing with Classic Modernism, Nouveau Realisme, Fluxus, Pop-Art and Viennese Actionism. Over 9000 exhibits can be seen here, including paintings, sculptures, installations, photos, graphic works and videos.
In addition, the museum is constantly running special exhibits in addition to its standard displays. To view these exhibits, it is often necessary to buy a special ticket which costs more than the standard entry, but the extra cost is usually not much more and can be well worth it.
The museum is located in Vienna's museum quarter, near many other museums. This area is located just outside the south end of the Ring Strasse, and is near the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts.
