Untersberg is the closest real mountain to the city of Salzburg, being located only 10 miles to the south of the city on the Austrian/German border.
The peak is situated 1972 meters above sea level and there is a cable car here which will take you from the valley to 1776 meters in just a few minutes. From here you can get a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, and easily see the Watzmann, Germany’s third highest peak, and the location of the Kehlsteinhaus or Eagle’s Nest – Hitler's famous holiday retreat.
There are a number of hiking trails on the mountain which are popular in the summer, and during the winter there is a 7.5km long trail that is used for skiing. Untersberg is also popular with Paragliders, canyoners and climbers.
There are also spectacular ice caves within the mountain, which can be visited as part of a tour group. These caves are particularly impressive in summer when the temperature difference between outside and inside is the most noticeable.
If you are interested in the history of the area, the Untersberg Museum is located at the foot of the mountain.
Untersberg can be reached easily by Bus from Salzburg, and use of the cable car is free if you have purchased the Salzburg Card.
