The Christkindlmarkt am Salzburger Domplatz and Residenzplatz is the most famous of all Salzburg Christmas Markets.
This Christmas market first took place in this exact spot over 500 years ago. The market consists of traditional wooden huts selling everything from festive trinkets to typical Austrian Christmas food and drinks, like the well known Glühwein (hot mulled wine) and roasted chestnuts, almonds and gingerbread. Traditional performances including wind instruments and choral singing take place here every Saturday during advent.
The Christkindlmarkt normally opens one week before the end of November and runs up until boxing day. This is definitely one of the most popular Christmas markets in Salzburg and tends to be quite full most of the time. The best time to visit to avoid the crowds is in the day, although the atmosphere is better at night.
