The Altes Residenztheater, also known as the Cuvilliés Theater, is the finest Rococo theatre in Germany built in 1750. In this theatre, Mozarts "Idomeneo" was first performed.
The theatre only seats 550 people and as such normally only smaller works are performed within.
The building sustained heavy damage as a result of Allied bombing during World War 2, but most of the interior was spared as it was removed during the war and stored in a safe location.
It is possible to view the theatre - an attraction in its own right - when performances are not taking place. As a part of the Munich Residenz, it can be easily viewed at the same time.
