Side Trips near Munich

Neuschwanstein Castle

Munich has almost more to do and see in the surrounding area than it does in the city itself!

Around 1 hour south of the city are the start of the German Alps. The town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is only 45 miles (70 kilometers) from Munich, and is Germany's premiere Alpine town. At nearly 10,000ft (3000m) above sea level, Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze, can be visited from here.

In addition, there are plenty of castles to see such as Hohenschwangau and Newschwanstein as well as beautiful lakes like Königsee and mountain retreats like the infamous Eagles Nest.

There is something for everyone here, so why not hire a car and make the most of your trip!
