The monastery has been brewing its own beer since the middle ages and continues to do so today. The beer comes in a variety of flavours, including its famous Doppelbock (a dark beer with a high alcohol percentage). There is a large restaurant here, as well as a beer garden which provides nice views of the countryside below.
It is also possible to visit the onsite church and climb the steeple where you can see all the way to the alps on a clear day.
To get to Andechs, you can catch the S-Bahn to Herrsching, which is the last stop on the S5 line. The trip will take about 45 minutes from Munich central station. From here, you can either take a bus to the top, or like most people, take the scenic walk up the hill. The walk takes about 1 hour through the forest, and gives you good views over Ammersee and the Bavarian countryside.
