Although from the outside it looks like an average church, inside it resembles a museum with very little of the usual internal furnishings such as an altar and pews which are normally associated with the interior of such buildings.
Its main purpose is to house major exhibitions throughout the year which showcases artifacts and objects from a wide variety of cultures and religions from around the world.
The exhibits are tastefully arranged in modern displays. There is also a magnificent organ with performances held throughout the year.
The church also functions as a venue for important Dutch cultural events such as the coronations of the Royal family and Royal weddings. Several prominent Dutch people are also buried here including the poet and author Joost van den Vondel.
It attracts thousands of visitors every year and can get very crowded especially during holiday periods and at summer time. Admission costs vary depending on the current exhibition although, if you have an Amsterdam Card, admission is included.
It is accessible by tram (station Dam Square) and is within a short walking distance from the Central station.
