Shopping in Amsterdam can be extremely pleasurable and this is certainly true if you plan to shop at Kalverstraat. This historical street can trace its history back 600 years and was known for trading in livestock in the 1600s. In fact the name Kalverstraat literally means calves market.
Kalverstraat is one of the most popular, up-market shopping streets in Amsterdam. It stretches for over 750 meters from Dam Square to Munt Tower. It is packed with every type of store including boutiques, specialty and department stores. There are a large variety of places to eat and drink. The street is actually the most expensive shopping street in the Netherlands as shop rental is very high.
Due to its popularity with both locals and international tourists, the area can be very crowded although the good news is you do not need to compete with vehicular traffic along the entire street as it is a pedestrian only mall.
Even if you are not a shopping addict, it is still very pleasurable to window shop and observe the hustle and bustle of the street. It you want to experience a more leisurely, quieter shopping trip, it is probably best to avoid the area on weekends, as it gets extremely busy.
