An unusual exhibit, which would probably not be permitted anywhere else in the world, is the Amsterdam Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum. It is exclusively dedicated to all things associated with Marihuana (hemp, cannabis, hash).
It is located in the center of the Red Light District and attracts large numbers of visitors throughout the year. This can be a problem, especially in summer, as the museum is not large and the visitor numbers increase.
It traces the history of marihuana to the present day, covering almost 8000 years and most visitors will be surprised at the versatility of this usually forbidden plant. It is used in a wide variety of products, including clothing, medicines and makeup.
There is also a large collection of smoking pipes, some of which are very ornate and decorative.
A distinct smell permeates the museum as you head towards the end of the exhibits. It originates from actual cannabis plants which are grown inside. The small indoor plantation shows the various stages of the plant's development. Strictly no taking samples home, although you can purchase seeds.
A reasonable entrance fee of approximately six euros is charged and children under 13 are free. The souvenir shop offers a wide selection of cannabis products, including clothes, smoking pipes and growing equipment.
