If you haven't brought the children, and you fancy an outing with a real difference, then the Sex Museum in Amsterdam is worth a visit.
The museum, entitled "The Temple of Venus", looks at the history of pornography and sex from ancient Greece through to what they think will be the future of the industry. It is the oldest museum of its kind in the world, and houses a vast collection of paintings, photographs, sculptures, films and much more.
As a visitor, you walk through an array of exhibits which track the history of "you know what" using a variety of historical resources and documents, along with more crude and graphic illustrations. Displays include historic versions of the Karma Sutra and Greek manuscripts, through to slightly cruder comic-book drawings and Victorian fetish wear. There is also an assortment of mannequins throughout the building, often in slightly compromising positions.
The museum is set inside three town houses, all connected together by a number of stairwells and bridges, allowing you to walk around the attractions at your own pace and by your own path.
Predictably, many of the items and displays are extremely risqué, including very large phallic symbols crafted into weird and wonderful things - including a pair of seven-foot high vibrating chairs. Pornographic films are also played on loop throughout the building, and private viewing booths displaying contemporary and older material are accessible.
It goes without saying that this isn't a family orientated attraction and you have to be 16 or older to enter the museum. A certain sense of humor is also required with a number of exhibits, with some having less historical value than others.
Despite certainly not being a day out for the family, the Amsterdam Sex Museum makes for an interesting and very different outing.
