Volkskundemuseum is dedicated to folk history and art of Austria and its surrounding countries. It is located is the picturesque Schönborn Palace grounds which has been home to the museum since 1917.
The displays are, for the most, artistically arranged and showcase the traditions and crafts of many regions. There is a wide range of exhibits including sculptures, rural equipment, musical instruments, jewelry and paintings to name a few. The costume and furniture sections are particularly interesting.
Many of the artifacts date from the early 1600s to the late 1900s. The displays portray how everyday society functioned during this period and makes a welcome change from looking at palaces and churches.
The museum attempts to bring the past to life and does so in a tasteful and informative manner.
Guided tours are offered in several languages and throughout summer a variety of exhibitions are on offer.
