The sound of music

The original Sound of Music tour is run by Panorama Tours, and departs twice daily from the Mirabellplatz Bus terminal at 9am and 2pm.

The tour takes you through the Salzburg surroundings where many parts of the film were shot, and the tour guide will explain to you the relevant landmarks along the way.

The tour takes in Mirabell Gardens (where the children sung "Do-Re-Mi" around the fountain), Leopoldskron Castle (the Trapp family home), Hellbrunn Castle (the hunting castle used in the film), Nonnberg Abbey (where Maria was a novice), St. Gilgen and Lake Wolfgang (scenery from the beginning of the movie was shot here) and the Wedding Church Mondsee (where the wedding in the film took place).

The tour lasts approximately 4 hours.

It is also possible to do this tour on your own as well. Mirabell Gardens is located directly in the town center, and can be reached on foot from almost anywhere. The same is true of the Nonnberg Abbey, which sits at the foot of the Salzburg Fortress.

Also in the center of the city is the Grosses Festspielhaus, where George von Trapp sings "Edelweiss".

Hellbrunn Palace can be reached by bus 25 from the city center, where you can see the Pavilion where Liesl sings "I am 16 going on 17".

The exact sights from the movie at these locations require a bit of searching, so for real fans it is probably better just to take the tour, where everything is explained to you.
