Although most things in Salzburg revolve around Mozart, the city has another famous composer to call its own.
Johann Michael Haydn was born in 1737, near the Hungarian border. He moved to Salzburg shortly after finishing choir school, where he was to take the position of Kappellmeister – a position he held for 43 years.
During this time, Haydn wrote over 350 pieces of work, mainly comprising of church and instrumental music.
The Michael Haydn Museum displays many different works from the composer, some original and some recreated. Here you can also listen to his works and learn more about the man behind the music.
The museum makes a good side trip as it is located at St. Peters Monastery, an attraction which shouldn’t be missed on a visit to Salzburg.
