Odeonsplatz is one of Munich's central squares, located just north of Marienplatz. This was once the location of the Schwabinger Tor, the gate to the entrance of the old city from the then village of Schwabing.
The center point of Odeonsplatz is the Feldherrnhalle, built in the Florentine style in 1844. To the east of the square is the Residenz and the Hofgarten, and to the west is the Theatinerkirche. One of Munich's most well known streets, Leopoldstrasse runs north from here through the district of Schwabing.
A number of events are held here each year, including the Odeonsplatz Classical Evening, and the St. Patricks Day parade. This is also the place where the infamous "Beer Hall Putsch", where Hitler tried to lead a coup against the Bavarian authorities took place.
