The historic, quaint Temple Bar area of Dublin, with its narrow, cobbled stone streets, is found on the south bank of the River Liffey. It is a great place to shop as you will be surrounded by a vibrant, charming 17th century cityscape.
There is a good range of small shops, many with unique goods for sale and if you are looking for something different to buy, then this is likely the place to find it. Many of the streets are pedestrian thoroughfares only, which makes shopping and sightseeing so much more pleasant.
Most of the shops are open from 9:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Saturday. Late night shopping is on Thursday to 8:00pm. There are several bookstores, clothing stores and, if you are looking for that special souvenir, you may like to pop in to Crafts Council of Ireland in Essex Street or Whichcraft in Lord Edward Street. Many artists and craftsmen have set up shop to sell their unique creations.
For those who love to shop at outdoor markets, you will not be disappointed. On Saturday and Sundays there is the Temple Bar Book Market held in the Square. It sells a wide range of new and second-hand books.
On Sundays, the Food Market is open for business selling cheeses, olives, fish, meat and a great range of fresh produce including fruit and vegetables, many of which are grown organically.
One of the most recent market additions is the Designer Mart at Cow's Lane. Here original designers showcase their products. It is held every Saturday and sells items such as jewelry, paintings, fashion, glass sculptures and even furniture. Be aware that, if bad weather sets in, many of the stalls in the open markets may close for business.
Once you have had your fill of the shops, there are plenty of great places to relax and enjoy a meal.
