Kaufhaus des Westens, often referred to as KeDeWe, is one of the best and most famous department stores not only in Berlin, but also internationally.
The building was first opened in 1907 but was badly damaged in World War II. Over the following decades, restoration and new construction work has created the building we see today.
The store has a huge variety of merchandise for sale. Each floor is elegantly and tastefully laid out and easy to navigate around. Everything is presented in an orderly, visually pleasing fashion. It sells high quality goods, which generally means things are not cheap.
All the major brands in men's and women's clothing, including Armani, Loop, Versace, Dior and Lagerfeld are available. Clothes can even be made to measure by the store's tailors.
A wide selection of home wares including furnishings and tableware is available as is electronic equipment and electrical items.
The gourmet section is on the 6th floor and is a food lover's delight, with many delicacies, both sweet and savory, for sale as well as more basic items such as fruit, vegetables and meat. Each counter is dedicated to a specific food sourced from local and international suppliers.
Restaurants and cafes are interspersed throughout the store, offering a wide choice of foods which should satisfy everyone's tastes. Spirits, wines and beers are also for sale.
After a hectic day of shopping you may wish to visit the Beauty and Wellness lounges, which offer many different treatments such as facials, massages, French manicures and hair styling. Generally, appointments would need to be made beforehand.
A visit to Berlin would not be complete without a visit to the Kaufhaus des Westens.
