Berlin's Aquadom and Sealife Center are located in the same area and admission includes both attractions.
The Aquadom is a very unique structure. It comprises a seamless cylinder made out of acrylic glass, which encases a beautiful, clear aquarium. In the center of the cylindrical aquarium is a see-through elevator, which is part of the Radisson Hotel complex.
It is a fairly recent structure, opened in 2003, and is a key feature of the Berlin Sea Live Center. It is supposed to be the largest acrylic cylinder in the world with a diameter of approximately 11 meters and is about 25 meters in height. The thickness of the acrylic also varies from 16cm at the top to 22cm at the bottom.
The visitor's area is located in a specially created passageway in the center of the cylinder at the bottom level. Visitors can ride on the elevator with a knowledgeable guide and experience a 360-degree world filled with colorful fish and coral as well as some stunning rock formations.
This superb engineering feat contains nearly one million liters of seawater and each day divers enter the tank to feed the fish and keep the area clean and sparklingly clear.
The combination of the Aquadom with the Sealife Center makes this one of Berlin's most popular attractions. The Sealife Center comprises of over 30 water tanks of various shapes and sizes. Each tank is devoted to a particular species or ecosystem and includes both freshwater and marine habitats.
The tanks have been carefully designed to allow the visitor to glimpse a world that they would not normally have an opportunity to experience.
The tanks are very well kept and include a large variety of fish species from the cold North Sea to the tropical oceans near the equator. The diversity on show is spectacular.
The tanks also feature river, lake and estuary habitats with many species indigenous to Germany.
Not only is Sealife a place of underwater beauty it is also an educational experience with visitor guides imparting a wealth of knowledge to the listener. There are also several interactive displays where you get the opportunity to touch the aquatic life.
As well as the fish tank, a new mirror maze attraction was opened in 2008. These mirrors reflect a multitude of images of underwater life, giving a very unreal atmosphere to the experience.
The Aquadom and Sealife Center is very centrally located close to Alexanderplatz and the Berliner Dom. It is well serviced by public transport and the nearest U-Bahn is Alexanderplatz.
