Nemo Amsterdam

One of the highlights of most major cities is their science center and Amsterdam's NEMO Science Center will not disappoint. It is located close to the central railway station, in Amsterdam's Eastern Dock area and is the biggest science center in the Netherlands.

It is housed in a unique building, often compared to the hull of a large green ship. The green exterior is due to the copper cladding which, as it ages, turns green. The center was opened in 1997 and an Italian architect named Renzo Piano, designed this futuristic building.

The center's motto is "Please touch everything you see and explore!". The center is filled with everything to do with science and technology. All your senses will be stimulated as you meander throughout this highly educational and, most importantly, fun center.

There are five floors of fun filled and mind blowing interactive and media displays. Also included are science demonstrations, workshops, lectures and exhibitions that frequently change throughout the year. Check details at the entrance for specific events and times.

Although there are several cafes to relax and enjoy a meal, you are not prevented from taking your own food and there are designated areas where you are permitted to eat.

One of the more pleasant places to eat is on the roof, which offers great views over the city.

The center can get very crowded, especially at holiday time but one way of avoiding ticketing queues is to buy your ticket online.

No guided tours are offered, as this is a place of self-discovery, with most exhibits in both English and Dutch. There is also a NEMO shop which is stocked with so many great products, all centered around science and technology.

A day at the NEMO is certainly recommended during your trip to Amsterdam especially if you have children tagging along on your stay.
