One of the most important and picturesque shopping precincts in Amsterdam is 'The Nine Streets'. Four 17th century canals, Prinsengracht, Kaisersgracht, Herengracht and Singel, surround this network of nine narrow streets.
Although the streets are narrow, cars are still permitted to use them though the most common form of transport seems to be bicycles.
The area offers a wide variety of goods for sale including boutique fashion stores, gifts shops, art galleries, jewelers, shoes stores and of course plenty of places to eat while absorbing the ambience of the area.
You will not find any large department or outlet stores here but this makes the shopping experience more unique and interesting, as you will probably find items not located elsewhere. For instance, there is a fantastic candle shop, up market second- hand clothes shops and even a toothbrush store.
Even if you do not want to buy anything, you will still be entertained and impressed by many of the wonderfully arranged window displays and the architecture of the 17th century buildings.
