Car Hire is available from a number of locations within the city, as well as the airport and in many surrounding suburbs. Most internationally recognized car hire operators have a branch in Munich, such as Budget, Avis, Enterprise and Sixt.
It could be argued that a rental car is not necessary for a trip to Munich. The airport is easily reachable by public transport, and Munich has an extensive public transport network including Trams, Subways, Buses and suburban railway.
However, there are many attractions in the Munich area, such as Neuschwanstein Castle, Berchtesgaden, Kehlsteinhaus and Hohenschwangau which are indeed difficult to access without a car.
Be aware that some car rental companies could put restrictions on what other countries the rental car is allowed to travel to. In almost every case, it is possible to travel to other western European countries such as Austria, Italy, France or Switzerland. However, some companies have restrictions on taking cars into Eastern European countries such as Poland or the Czech Republic. If travel is intended in any of these countries, it is best to check if this is possible when making a reservation.
